(Cartulaire de l’abbaye de Saint–Père de Chartres, ed. M. Guérard. [2 vols. Paris, 1840], II, pp 391-2, CAPITULUM CLXXVII) [Before
1150] [Nota Bene: The new material herein is under Copyright.] De anniversario
abbatis Udonis. Brother Udo, Abbot of the monastery of St. Peter of Chartres makes known to all present and future by this charter that, by the common consent of all, in the chapter of the monks, it has been done and confirmed that, at the end of his present life, there shall be a solemn celebration of the anniversary of his death each year, including a splendid feast for the brothers. To pay for
this, a rent of 35s. which this church has on a vinyard in the place
called Barbou, which vinyard came from the family
property of the Abbot and had been given, on his council, by his uncle
William when he came to St. Peter’s to become a monk.[1] If this
revenue is not enough to pay for the feast, then 14s. from the rent
which the monks have from Udo’s worldly brother, Haimeric (Chenard)
on the market of Chartres shall be used, as well as 10s. rent on the
port of Conflans(sur-Seine?) which the abbey also has each year from Mabilia,
mother of the monk Guido. And if, incredibly, the rent from the vinyard and that from the market and that from the port should not be enough to pay for this feast, then the alms which the refectory of the monks possesses from the ovens, vinyards and mills of Orléans shall be used. This is decreed and confirmed in the Chapter of the monks, by the Authority of Almighty God –Father, Son and Holy Spirit– and of Maria, the most Glorious Mother of God, and of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of our most Holy Master Benedict and of all the Saints, and by our own Authority.
CSP 341 [Ibid.,
p. 341, "CAPITULUM CXIII.]
[Apparently
datable only by the abbacy of Abbot William, 1101-1129. However, it
is of interest that another nephew of this William Pullus,
Udo who was soon to become the sucessor of Abbot William
is not mentioned in this act, neither in its text, nor among the witnesses
to it, even though Abbot Udo later claimed (in CSP391-2, above) that
he had been responsible (per
consilium nostrum) for his uncle's gift. It is tempting,
therefore, to see this act as being, somehow, part of the causal chain
which led to the election of Udo, in which case we might place it
in the last years of Abbot William, near 1129.] De arpenno et quadrante vinee apud Barbou, Before 1129, William Pullus, canon of St. Mary of Chartres, ill and near death, wishing to become a monk, gave St. Peter’s of Chartres an arpent and a quarter of vinyard at the place called “Barbou,” located between the burg of St. Peter’s and the burg of St. Martin’s of Chartres. His nephews, Godfrey, Haimeric and Garin came to the chapter of the monks and, in the presence of Abbot William, consented to this gift and (swore to) defend it against all claims. [1] The donation of the cens of the vinyards of Barbou is recorded in a notice which purports to be from the time of Udo’s predecessor, Abbot William (1101-1130; CSP 341, transcribed below). It is perhaps interesting to note that in that document Udo is not mentioned at all, either in the text nor in the list of witnesses, though William’s nephews’– Udo’s brothers’– consent to the gift are an important part (the raison d’être?) of the charter.
